Free Drawing and Print Graphics

The term drawing was subject to considerable change in the last century. The artistic directions such as e.g. surrealism or Dadaism initiated intensive experimentation with unusual means and surfaces. The often subordinate role of drawing as study or sketching was partly challenged and stimulated the possibility of the equality of the medium with established forms of art (e.g. painting). This development continued later e.g. with concept or minimal art. With the simultaneous appearance of New Media at the beginning of the 1960s up to today the achievement of drawing in the new medial context became visible, also as the documentation of diverse graphical comments. In doing so, different drawing materials were used. More often, real space (also landscape as space) up to virtual space has replaced the sheet of paper.
